$40 lines will probably be joined at centom or is

to allow of through traffic betneen liong Kong and lankox.

For this reason, I have allowed very high working

Expenses per mile as compared with other Railways.

I have no figures for a similarly situated Pailway

and therefore cannot bring forward any actual example

to check my estimate of actual cost of running and

can only base my calculations on a comparatively high

unit cost per mile compared with longer Railway.

ESTIMATE OF TRAFFIC.

Now to begin with the passenger traffic to and

from Canton. As far as I can find out from the figures

at my disposal, the fares paid by the 4500 (2250 each

way) passengers are as follows:-

79% OF 315 pay 1/50 for the trip

30% or 1350 1/20

$472. $1620.

$ 992.

63% or 2835

making a total of $3084 as the daily receipts or say roughly $3000 per day of which the British Section would get $500 as its share if receipts were divided

by mileage.

For ordinary passenger traffic in China, I think

four clases will be necessary. The 4th class being

to accommodate the coolie who pays only 35 cents on

the steamer and has to find room for himself wherever

he can.

The cost of running a passenger depends on the

number that can be crowded into a carriage, Taking

an ordinary carriage 60 ft. long. It should carry

say 50 first class, 75 second, 100 third and 120 fourth

class at a cost respectivaly of 1,

75, 50 and *45

cents
